YDWC President’s statement on the SCOTUS opinion overturning Roe V. Wade
The following is a statement by YDWC President Tyler Giacalone on the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court:
The Young Democrats of Will County are stunned by the sheer level of cruelty the right wing of the Supreme Court is inflicting on women across the United States, and their willingness to provide the legal cover for every Republican that wants to ban abortion in all forms. This decision will not end abortions; instead it forces women to resort to deadly means to terminate a pregnancy. This decision is a public health crisis.
In addition, we must recognize that the most devastating effects of this ruling will be felt by the most vulnerable in our society: children, poor women, and women of color. With Republicans already promising to use the court’s decision to ban abortions even for victims of rape and incest, we are about to see communities across our country be devastated by the effects of these invasive and oppressive policies. Donald Trump’s appointees cannot be allowed to divide us, as they needlessly subject women to these cruel invasions of their constitutional rights.
We at the YDWC applaud Illinois Democrats in leading the fight to guarantee a woman’s right to choose and access safe abortions, and preserving those rights in one of the most progressive set of laws in our country. But we must do more - as our neighboring states continue to deny women their basic human rights, our state has an obligation to become a safe haven for all women who wish to make a very private medical decision without governmental interference. And we as voters have an obligation as well to show up to the ballot box and support candidates who wish to continue the fight for equality among all genders, including in the 2022 midterms. This decision demonstrates that what we once thought were our inalienable rights are subject to devastating attacks by right wing politicians, and we need to fight for them every election cycle. Our rights are on the ballot this November. Our future is on the ballot this November.
