YDWC Grieves with the Families of Uvalde, Texas, and Demands Policy Change to Stop Future Tragedies
Naperville, Ill. - The following is a statement from YDWC President Tyler Gicalone on the recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas
We, at Young Democrats of Will County, are devastated over yet another senseless act of violence, and we mourn with families of both the victims in Uvalde, Texas, and families of all victims of gun violence in our country. We mourn the innocent lives lost in Uvalde, Buffalo, Sandy Hook, Columbine, Aurora, and in the numerous other shootings across the United States.
Gun violence is a public health crisis. No one deserves to live in fear of these senseless acts of violence happening in their communities, and we must act now to prevent acts like this from ever happening again. We have a duty to mobilize to get our elected officials to pass proper gun policies to protect everyone. We must also act to elect gun sense candidates up and down the ballot. Our futures and safety are at stake. We are echoing the young voices that demand our elected officials to take action to prevent even more deaths.
In order to bring attention to this issue and mobilize our community behind better gun policies, Young Democrats of Will County will be participating in National Gun Violence Prevention Day and Wear Orange Weekend on June 3rd, 2022. We ask young people and anyone across our community to wear orange on June 3rd to honor those lost to gun violence and to amplify the importance of gun violence prevention.
To those attending our Annual Dinner on June 3rd, we ask that you wear orange with us to bring awareness to this cause. Together, we can stop more tragedies and put an end to this public health crisis.
